Congratulations to Gemma, Robert, Gino & Dominic for winning a Merit Award for Project Butterfly! Congratulations to Julia and Kaia for winning a Citation Award for the Wave Project!

The Architecture at Zero competition is a zero net energy architectural design competition for students and professionals all over the world. Each year, they have a different project on an actual site for contestants to design buildings for. This year, the competition was to create two buildings for SF State's Center for Estuary and Ocean Science in Tiburon, California. Our assignment was to design both buildings to meet the requirements of the competition. The first building is the 8,300 square foot Bayside Visitor's Center, with exhibits, a wet lab, retail space, and other spaces. The second, smaller building is the 1,500 square foot Science-on-the-Bay: Aquatic Education and Recreation building, where guests can go on boat tours, rent kayaks, etc. We had to incorporate systems like solar, rainwater collection, and radiant heat, as well as take advantage of natural light and building orientation to meet the energy requirements. In addition to all that, the buildings had to be aesthetically pleasing and places that people would want to come to. Two groups of our students won awards, a Merit Award and a Citation Award, and were recognized by PG&E.
